Having worked with some of the best chefs in the UK Gelf finally settled at River Cottage in 2012 to work alongside Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall where he ran the busy kitchens at the heart of the world-renowned 100 acre organic farm, delivering an internationally award winning cookery school, high end dining and bespoke events, as well as appearing in the associated iconic TV series.
Gelf was one of the first chefs in the UK to win a Green Michelin star and has been championing sustainably produced food for the last 20 years. Gelf wrote the bestselling cookbooks River Cottage Great Salads, River Cottage Great Roasts and River Cottage Great Pies.
More recently, Gelf then moved to The Newt in Somerset and to a new role as Head of Food. Here he is responsible for creating food concepts across all restaurants, retail and eateries at The Newt, working closely with chefs, growers and artisans and collaborating with production teams to ensure seasonality, quality, and consistency.
Gelf now champions an ‘estate first’ approach: spotlighting homegrown, reared and estate-made produce to showcase the Somerset landscape through its cuisine, and share The Newt’s unique food story with guests and members through hosting workshops and events.
