From Soil Health to Food Security: The Regenerative Revolution - With Wild By Nature, Planton Farm and Kate Humble
Wild by Nature was born when brothers Ed and Jake left their jobs in the city and moved back to where they had grown up in the Welsh borders, with a shared desire to be closer to nature and to grow, cook and share the food from their farm. Jake had spent six years working in kitchens across the world and Ed, a keen outdoorsman, had a burning desire to get involved in farming, a change from his day job as a sales manager at John Lewis. It started with a few sheep, some cattle and a handful of unruly pigs and has since grown to include their on-farm butchery, wedding venue, farmhouse retreat, Pub and a second farm. Along with Jake’s wife Amie and their incredible team we love sharing the rugged beauty of the Black Mountains with their guests.
At Wild by Nature they farm primarily for flavour, selecting traditional breeds that are best suited to the environment and giving them the time to mature and develop naturally. All of their cattle and sheep are 100% pasture fed.
They manage their livestock in a way that increases biodiversity and allows for natural regeneration of soil. This ethos also applies to their no dig vegetable garden and apple orchards.
Their aim is to control as much of the process from farm to plate as possible and they are extremely fortunate to have our on-farm butchery where they can dry age our meat and produce a range of home cured charcuterie. This nose to tail approach means that no part of the animal is wasted.
Clare is a regenerative farmer and influential voice in regenerative agriculture, with deep roots in both policy and corporate spheres of the agri-food world. Since the early 2000s, she has held roles spanning the entire food system – from grassroots farming to corporate strategy – bringing a wealth of experience and a systems-thinking approach to everything she does.
Clare farms at Planton Farm in Shropshire, a living example of what’s possible with livestock and perennial food systems. The farm integrates cattle, chickens, a perennial market garden, and a food forest – all designed to work with, not against, nature. It’s also the home of Impeckable Poultry, an innovative project redefining regenerative chicken production using dual-purpose birds.
As co-founder of the mentoring programme Roots to Regeneration, Clare supports farmers and professionals in navigating their own journeys into regenerative agriculture – helping them shift mindsets, build resilience, and design systems that work for their land, lives, and values.
